Blog entry 1: food and politics of the hunger games

My personal experience with food and diet has been all over the place in my life. Maintaining a healthy diet is always challenging for me, but i managed to overcome that challenge by researching on different methods i would be comfortable with. After days of research and experimenting, I finally came across a more popular tradition among most men with a heavier build like I have. Its basically a pre-workout protein powder with low fat ingredients, with 30 minutes of cardio and then 30 minutes of weight lifting following that. And part of my normal home diet is just to avoid carbs and have greens with every meal (preferably salads). Ever since i found these methods, i have been increasingly healthy, slowly but surely. The main thing i expect to learn in the hunger games class is to see the different ways that the book and movie can correlate to real life food traditions, and how it can actually help us understand more about it. When i think of the politics of food, i usually think of the mass production and distribution of food to consumers. And because the hunger games also deals with this aspect of food, its the perfect story for it in my eyes. And finally, i’m interested in the food of politics because of how relevant it is in today’s society and in my personal routine as well, and i feel that the class will help me in understanding this topic more and even get me motivated about talking about it.

I have always been very intrigued with the fast food industry and how its shaped the industry within the past few years. Since i work at a fast food place (Chick-fil-a) i thought that it would be the prefect thing to base my multimedia project on. But that wasn’t specific enough. I chose to base the project off of my own restaurant workplace, but it quickly changed into the politics surrounding my workplace and others. My style of work ethic has changed drastically within the span of 2 years, and explaining the cause for these changes will be a very interesting topic for other people. Since i have seen politics change certain things at my job and the company as a whole within the past year, i wanted to base my citing sources off of news blogs, channels, and social media accounts. I chose to do this because internet media is the prime source of our political basis being spread to millions of people out there. With many stories about chick-fil -a out there already, i have decided to pick one of these stories as a piece of evidence to summarize my whole point. doing this instead of citing multiple different types of sources will be easier for me and more straightforward for the audience as well.

There are various connections between food and identity. But the main one being culture, is the prime example of how food and identity are connected. All the food we eat reveals a lot about who people are and how we got there. This is an aspect of identity that has been around since the beginning of time. But the connection between food and identity is something that many people overlook because we have so many variations of food types available to us. Since societies all around the world are already becoming melting pots of cultures, we absorb many of these cultures different from ours. We are exposed to it, so we consume it, and eventually we end up endorsing it. Without this cultural influence of food, we would have very limited choice of food to consume in our country. Food also shapes every society, and the cultures we are a part of causes us to obsess over it almost every day, making it one of the biggest phenomenons in world history. we constantly think about what to eat and not to eat, what to feed our peers and friends, and how to serve each dish. We all have our own ways of perceiving food, and it is a blessing that we have the opportunity to explore not only ours, but others in order to improve.

For this post, i chose the “How Are Food and the Environment Related?” article, by Carolyn Denton. This article takes a deep dive into whether we are affecting the environment or the environment is affecting us. Carolyn argues that its both, and goes into detail about why. For instance on how we affect the environment, it explains that our dieting affects the environment. She explains that its because of the way we grow the necessary ingredients to satisfy our diets, which is with pesticides and chemicals. That is the prime reason for this negative impact. But the article also talks about the fact that the environment has various kinds of toxins that can harm us within these diets. For instance, coming from The EPA, asthma, autism, cancer, lung disease, Parkinson’s disease, and conditions associated with reproductive health, are strongly linked to environmental exposure. I strongly believe that what Carolyn is saying is correct. She gives proper evidence and data from The Environmental Protection Agency, The Genes and Environment Initiative, and The US Department of Agriculture, about the negatives of both sides. I take this position mainly because of the evidence as i said. Many other claims only pay attention to how we affect the environment, and approach with the same argument. Since this article pays attention to both sides and gives much evidence supporting both sides, it is only fair that this is a very credible and believable article.

There are many types of recipes that i would like to try out, but there is one in particular. Many people in my Puerto Rican family talk about classic beef Empanadillas (aka Empanadas). The history of this dish is quite popular and is still very relevant today. Empanadas have their origins in Spain and Portugal. They first appeared in Medieval Iberia during the time of the Moorish invasions. A cookbook published in Catalan in 1520 mentions empanadas filled with seafood and beef. Due to the large number of Galician immigrants in Latin America, the empanada gallega has also become popular in that region. The dish was carried to Latin America and the Philippines by Spanish colonists, There are many types of recipes that i would like to try out, but there is one in particular.
